CONTENT BASED INSTRUCTION

v  CBI is "...an approach to language instruction that integrates the presentation of topics or tasks from subject matter classes (e.g., math, social studies) within the context of teaching a second or foreign language"

v                What is the purpose CBI??

The goal of CBI is to prepare students to acquire the languages while using the context of any subject matter so that students learn the language by using it within the specific context.

v       During the lesson:

1.    Divide the class into small groups .
2.    Share and compare their information with other group.
3.    As the end result of this sharing of information which could take    the form of a group report or presentation of some kind

v       What is characteristics CBI

-          the communication principle which puts forward that activities involving real communication promote language learning.
-          the task principle which refers to the concept that activities in which language is used for carrying out meaningful tasks promote language learning.
-          the meaningfulness principle that implies that language that appears to be meaningful to the learner will support the language learning process

v    CBI EXTREMES
§  content driven classes
Ø content learning is a priority while language learning is secondary

§  Language driven classes
Ø Language learning is priority while content learning is incidental

v       FINDING A BALANCE

§  In order  to balance content-driven classes and language-driven  classes, three types of CBI where implemented
Ø  Sheltered model
Ø  Adjunct model
Ø  Theme based model

v       Sheltered model

-       Learners are given special assistance
-       Sometimes two teacher  can work together to give instruction in a specific subject
-       The content specialist will give a short lecture and than the English specialist will check that the student have understood the important words by reviewing them later

v  Adjunct model

-       Students are expected to learn content material while simultaneously acquiring academic language proficiency
-       Content instructor and language share responsibility  for students learning

v  Theme based model

-    The goal  of these courses is to help students develop L2 skills and proficiency.
-       Themes are selected based on their potential to contribute to the learner’s language growth in specific topical or functional domains.
-    Theme-based courses are taught by language instructors to L2 Learners who are evaluated in terms of their language growth.
-    Content learning is incidental.

v  Conclusion

-       CBI is an effective method of combining language and content learning.
-       Theme Based CBI works well on ESL/EFL contexts.

-       Learner motivation increases when students are learning about something, rather than just studying language.
